100 Drabbles of Summer Participants-- Please Read!

Wow! On behalf of the mods, we're delighted with the outpouring of response and all the drabbles you guys are turning out. What a great kick-off to the summer!

However, several members have brought up to us that their flists are getting swallowed up by drabbles. They don't want to stop watching the community, but THE DRABBLES ARE WORSE THAN TRIBBLES DEAR GOD.

*coughahem*

So. After much debate which we settled with an epic thumb war, your mods have decided to ask that you stop posting your invididual drabbles directly to charloft.

Instead, each day your mods will put up a Daily Drabble Round-Up post, and you can post your drabbles as comments to that daily post. Make sense?

Again, you don't have to post them to the community at all if you don't want. If you just want to post them to your own journal entry, that's fine-- in which case, this doesn't apply to you, nothing has changed, go about your business. This is just to keep charloft from filling up with mucho drabbles. Instead, they'll be at the Daily Drabble Round-Up, where you can browse the drabbles of you and other members at your leh-zure.

You may still tag the Daily Drabble Round-Ups with your personal tag if you post a drabble to it.

As always, ask us if you have any questions!

Guys did you think of doing a sub-comm just for the drabbles?

It's a suggestion and we'll keep it in mind. This is our first time trying to run something like this, so we're feeling it out as we go. :)

I think that after the initial rush of drabbling has died down people will probably go more quiet on the drabble front, so hopefully we won't need a comm for it. But the mods will take it under consideration, so thanks for the idea!

Re: I'm very prompt.
I have no idea what fandom/the chars are from, but I liked the drabbles all the same! Good use of dialogue.

Re: 53 Picture of a box of old photographs
Sarah was by her bed when she nearly tripped over something on the floor. Getting down on her hands and knees she pulled a box which was now cracked at the corner out to have a look.

Lifting the lid she found old photographs and started to take them out for a closer inspection.

She recognised them as belonging to her mother and wondered how long they had been in her family.

Sarah stopped at the one of her mother and realised that it had been taken at a similar age as to she was now and felt a familiar ache inside.

#26 Heat
Kotoro had never been so uncomfortable in his life. It was a considerable feat because he had spent several months as a P.O.W. in a camp that had made the International Council scream outrage and convict a dozen people of war crimes.

At least in Rhaj there were clouds, he thought and tilted the small electric fan so it blew more or less directly onto his sweating neck without disturbing the papers he was reading. I would rather have a humid, sticky breeze than this slow bake in an oven where sweat doesn't linger long enough to do it's job.

#42 - Travel Troubles (1 out of 100)
“Lemme guess…” Walt pressed a thumb into his left eye socket to relieve pressure that was building. “You lost track of time….?”

“You said it, not me.” Cade came down from the warping platform, unhooking himself from his time travel life line.

“It’s such a bad pun, I didn’t feel like saying it…”

“You already did.”

“Because it needed to be said!” Walt’s headache was full-blown. “It’s tradition!”

“Um,” Cade said.

“Never mind…Your meeting go all right?”

“The Pharaoh refused to give me the canopic jar.”

“Meaning?”

“I’m stealing it from the museum tomorrow night.”

“Yaaaaay!”

“You’re not invited.”

“Awwww…..”

#11 - Gluttony (2 out of 100)
“Three more scoops,” Walter bargained

“No,” Cade said.

“But it’s not enougghhhhh...”

“Walt, you’ve had enough ice cream today.”

“But I’m still hungrrrrry….” The mercenary stomped his feet, mimicking his nine-year-old niece too closely for comfort.

“Ice cream isn’t supposed to fill you up.” Cade shook his head in bemusement.

“I know…” Walt’s lips pursed. “It’s so good. Chocolate-chip cookie dough is my weakness.”

“That doesn’t change the fact that this is your third ice cream cone today.”

“You’re right...” Walt wilted like a dried out flower.

After a moment, Cade sighed. “All right, you can have one more.”

“Yaaaaay!”

Prompt #74 ~ Picture of unusual sunbathers
The first time Alice had heard of such a thing, she was completely shocked. On second thought (& third), it had seemed slightly less curious. Of course, verdicts came before trials and things were often found before they were lost (she never had figured out how the latter worked) in Wonderland ... so why would sea-bathing in the middle of winter be surprising? (Alice had never seen any body of water beside little brooks & the occasional river there, but the Mock Turtle and Tweedles did mention seas.)

Would the Wonderland seas be as frigid in wintertime as those in England?

100 Drabbles of Summer 2. Fireworks
2. FIREWORKS

Above him, volleys of color exploded like confetti, framed by the inky sky. Streaks of red, green, white, and gold shaped intricate designs in the firmament, and numerous concussive booms filled his senses. His earliest memories of watching fireworks were from the endless parties on his grandfather’s estate. His step-grandmother clearly adored fireworks, and his grandfather indulged her every whimsy.

Sadness crept into him as the vibrant colors faded and booms muffled. Disembodied voices drifting toward him, “Major, he’s waking up.”

“Colonel Sheppard, hey; you tripped, struck your head on a rock.”

Oh…those fireworks; he preferred his whimsical grandmother’s.

#38 - Sticky (3 out of 100)
Walt wasn’t eating his sextuple-scoop ice cream cone fast enough. Rivulets of blue moon, chocolate chip mint, cookie dough, and Superman dripped down the sugar sprinkle cone, dribble-plipping along his fingernails.

He sucked along the side of the cone like a bottom-feeder fish having an algae feast, chasing melting streams of colorful goodness with his ant-eater like tongue.

“Ahm phinishing eet asf fastf…”

“Don’t talk, just eat.” Cade handed Walter a ton of napkins, ready with more if he needed them. “I have hand sanitizer when you’re done.”

“Fank you.” Walter slurped noisly, his melty summer treat speckling the sidewalk.

#30 - Stiches (4 out of 100)
Cade was used to Walter being careless.

“Don’t worry about me,” the merc told him every time. “I’ve got a healing thingy. It’s in my DNA…I’m good.”

This time, Walter had been surfing and got a little too close to a collection of rocky shore.

“Whoops,” was all Walter said about the matter, although there was a rather large bleeding gash at the very tip of his scalp, peeling up hair follicles.

Cade would’ve felt a lot better if Walt went to get stitched up, what with the salt water affecting his “healing thingy,” but Walt wasn’t going to listen.

#1 - Vacation (5 out of 100)
“We may live in Hawaii,” said Walter. “but it ain’t Disneyworld!”

“That’s where you want to go?” Cade’s pen pointed at the option.

“Disneyworld! Disneyworld!” Walter was bouncing up and down in the kitchen chair, bumping the table. “Ohmifreakinggod, do you have any idea!?”

“I’ll take that as a yes.” He made a check. “Denmark?”

“Disneyworld!”

“Germany?”

“Disneyworld!”

“Italy?”

“Disneyworld!”

Cade sighed, feeling a wee bit compromised. “All right, we’ll look into it… but only if our finances are green.”

“There’s no Disneyworld in the future is there?” Walt was suddenly serious, sad.

“No…”

“Then that’s more reason to go!”

"100 drabbles - 2. fireworks"
[chared mod-bods - this is a lot like the problems "the wheel committee" had at Farsten, Wink and Snood; they eventually convinced the square-wheel advocates that "round to ground" had better slogan wood]

It's after midnight, Monday morning. James and Sarah have quietly pulled the car behind the dumpster in the back of Al's Big Burger World. They're hand-pumping old cooking oil from a holding tank into the car's fuel tank.

The day to remember the horrors of the first World War has just begun, as Sunday evening's personal fireworks shoot-out is coming to a close.

"Boom ... whoooooosh ... pop ..." and the night is lit blood red. Then "boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom-boom." Then silence. Then "BOOM!" shakes the ground.

"Jesus, fuck!" Sarah says and pauses. "When do we get that playing 'big dog' is 'old,' not 'young'?"

#51:  picture of ants marching.

Anyone could tell you, Callum Sutton was not the type of person who would ever listen to the Dave Matthews Band.  People just didn't associate his clean cut image with the 'do your own thing' music genre.  But he would tell you a different story.  Because there was just something about the horn and violin introduction composition at the beginning of Ants Marching that made him happy without any effort whatsoever.  He would find himself humming it, never singing it, at work in want to hear it.  He smiled when he left work, knowing soon he'd be singing along soon.

Drabble # 67: Picture of the beach
Beach... One mile of private, white sand, crystal clear blue water beach. He remembered being a child growing up on this beach. Back then, the sun rose on his right and set on his left. He new east and west now, of course, but sitting here made him think of simpler times. Times when his life wasn't so complicated and all his problems where solved by a hug and kiss from his mum and a Popsicle from his dad. He sighed, wondering why everything in life had to get complex. Craving youth again, he knew were he was sitting tomorrow.

Drabble #76: Author's Choice: Flip flops
His feet looked so odd and alien in flip flops. He'd only bought them for today because Norton had insisted. The selling point in that argument came when he mentioned how dirty his dress shoes would be after a walk on the sandy shore of the lake. And really, who wore dress shoes and slacks to the lake? So there he sat, in his swim trunks, looking down at his blindingly pale legs with those... things... on his feet. He actually felt naked in them. There was something comforting about dress shoes, with their confinement. Sandals.. those were just odd.

There was no redemption.

Badru knew what he must do. He stalked his prey, lurking in darkness. This man. No, not a man. A degenerate fiend. This fiend was due to suffer. Badru would see to that.

Hidden in the shadows of the full moon, Badru silently waited. He could hear the fiend's footsteps thumping toward him. This was the moment Badru had be longing for. He rose from the shadows, teeth bared, snarling, growling. Leaping at the fiend's throat, blood spraying, Badru ripped at his throat. The fiend fell dead. Badru sat on his haunches, howling into the night.

6. Pride (5 of 100)
"That's my brother," Val whispers to Ellis, as if the older man hasn't met his sibling before. Val's seated in the school auditorium on a folding chair, sandwiched between Ellis on one side, Alison on the other. Their father's stepped out in the aisle to take pictures, as the graduates walk.

"He's rocking the cap and gown," Alison says, grinning. For once, there's none of her sisterly jibes.

Theo collects his diploma, an honor society medal, an athletic scholarship.

He flashes them a grin before walking off stage.

"That's my brother," Val repeats.

"Yes sugar," Ellis says, fondly. "I know."

61. fresh cut fruit (6 of 100)
Val sits at the kitchen table, watching the quick, practiced movements of Ellis's hands with the knife. Kwiis, bananas, oranges, blue and raspberries all get added to the bowl. His favorite bowl- the one with the blue swirls. Ice cream's already resting in the bottom of it, and Ellis carefully arranges the fruit over it.

In the center of the bowl he places a single, uncut strawberry. The very first fruit yielded from their garden.

Val eats everything else before taking the strawberry in hand, admiring its juicy perfection. He takes a big bite, then smiles warm. "Tastes like summer!"

#76 Author's Choice {Warning 1 Bad Word}
The full moon had been...well, it had been awful if Badru was going to be honest with himself. He had been attacked and that was fucking scary. He missed the African plains. He missed freedom. He missed, no. He wouldn't allow himself to go that far. They were gone, Badru should just let the dead rest. But his soul still ached for those he had lost. Time ravaged everything around him. He supposed that's why he became such a loner as years worn on. Every full moon Badru would howl, lonely, loudly, letting the dead know he missed them.

Logan Maxwell - OC - # 52 - BBQ Picture (1 of 100)
It was no secret that Logan didn’t cook. He avoided the kitchen like it was the plague and if push came to shove he’d rather order out then attempt to make anything more complicated than Kraft Dinner or hot dogs.

Barbequing however was a completely different story!

He wasn’t sure where the urge came from to buy the barbeque but now that he had it, he wanted to cook everything on it. He picked up every kind of meat he could think of and along with a few other items he put them all on.

Hopefully Heather was very hungry.

Drabble #32: Road Trips
When he was little, every summer, his father would pack up the car and they would go on a road trip to some part of the country he'd never been to. He'd loved that. He loved to learn about new places and, even now that he was thirty, he still liked to travel to parts of the country he'd never seen.

That was the thing about Lanstonia, it was small. He was running out of places to travel. The only logical thing left then, he thought as he booked flights to New York, was expand his map to travel on.

#34 - Tune
It just takes a few words to express a sentiment perfectly.
It takes two minutes and twenty seconds start to finish, to come to a realization that seems oh-so-obvious in hindsight.
It takes a lot of nerve, at first, to sing along with this particular song, even by yourself. This song means more, somehow. It does get easier as time goes on. Having an appreciative audience helps!
It will be with you forever after that. It will come to your lips for no reason at all.

"So long as you kiss me and the world around us shatters."

#2 - Fireworks
I walked out my door and there he was, standing on the corner. I stopped and stared, watching him watch me, cigarette smoke curling from his mouth. “It’s you,” I said.

“It’s me.”

I don’t remember moving but somehow the space between us was nil. He pulled me to him. Finally, after all these years, after all the pain and the waiting and the wanting – our lips met.

I was not prepared for the sickness that rose in my throat. It wasn’t what I’d imagined or needed. There were no fireworks that night – or any of the nights that followed.

100 Drabbles of Summer #3 - Camp (for Jess)
An endless night sky, not a cloud or star in sight, surrounded by nature, wrapped in her darkness - just the way she likes it. She's at one with the earth and everything in it.

She sighs, knowing how much she'll miss this. Three more days and it's back to the hustle and bustle of the city and her busy life back home. It's time to move on and she knows it.

She follows the trail back, finding tents assembled and her troop gathered, cake and presents piled on a table in front of them. This is what she'll miss most.

Quick question. I noticed that there are tags for the writers on the round up entries, but how do the tags get there if we are using the comments to post the drabbles?
I noticed on the roundup I posted in that my name wasn't in the tags. So I'm wondering what I did wrong ~lol~

ETA: Oh wait, I think I figured it out. I see the edit tags option at the top of the entry now ~_~
